Hello Guys,Cartoonist Afthab Akbar here.

Here is a cartoon version of Legendary Footballer Lionel Messi’s Copa America Campaigns from 2007 to 2019.

Since the 2020 Copa America Championship has been postponed, let’s enjoy his “Quest for Glory” in the last few years.

The classy player’s first ever appearance in the coveted event was in the 2007 Copa America Championships. His team beat Mexico in the Semi finals after the Messi himself scored in the second half of the match.
The final was against the arch rivals Brazil, in which his team was beaten 0-3, which included an own goal from Ayala, who tried to stop a cross from Dani Alves.

In the next edition of the championship which occurred in 2011, his team lost in the Quarter final to Uruguay in the Penalty Shootouts after the 86th minute red card for Javier Mascherano. Uruguay went on to beat Peru in semi final and Paraguay in the final to clinch the title.

Next edition of Copa America was in 2015, in which Argentina beat Colombia in the Quarter finals in a penalty shootout to reach the semi finals. In the semi finals they beat Paraguay in a whooping margin of 6-1.

In the finals they faced Chile. In the 33rd minute, Gary Medel was given a yellow card for a dangerous play when he attempted a high volley and kicked Messi in the stomach on the follow through. Messi went down, but was not forced to leave the match.
The game was decided in penalty shootouts, in which only Messi scored for Argentina. Alexis Sanchez hit the game-winning penalty to give Chile a 4-1 advantage, after Gonzalo Higuain missed badly for Argentina and his teammate Ever Banega’s penalty was saved by Claudio Bravo. Lionel Messi was the only Argentine to convert his penalty in the shoot-out.

2016 saw one more Copa America Championship.
In this tournament, Argentina beat Venezuela in the Quarter finals 4-1, thanks to early goals from Higuan. Messi also scored in this match. Gonzalo Higuain scored two and Lionel Messi got his 54th international goal as Argentina ease past Venezuela to the Semi finals.

In the semi finals Argentina beat United States 4-0, which included Messi’s free kick goal. Messi unleashed a magical strike that curled and spun straight into the upper corner of the goal.
It wasn’t all Messi for Argentina, as Gonzalo Higuain scored twice and Ezequiel Lavezzi scored the game’s first goal, but No. 10 assisted on two of those three goals his teammates scored.

The final saw the previous years finalists going against each other again. Chile won the Copa America again, on penalties again. A cruel case of history repeating condemns Argentina to runners-up yet again after a match that was marred by fouls, stoppages, injuries, cards and poor officiating. The result was same, as the game was decided in the penalty shootouts again. This time the legendary player failed to score, eventually losing the title.

Messi was in tears after the match, inconsolable after Argentina went into the final as favorites. That was three finals in three years with zero trophies for the Barcelona star in the albiceleste jersey.

VAR Technology, following the debut of VAR at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, video replay technology has made its way to 2019 Copa America Championships.

Argentina faced Brazil in a controversial Semi final in which they lost 0-2. Argentina and its captain Lionel Messi were incensed that the referee not only failed to award them two penalties in their 2-0 defeat, but that he also refused to consult VAR to check their claims. The two incidents that angered the Argentines were when Sergio Aguero appeared to be bundled over in the box by Brazil captain Dani Alves, and a blatant shoulder charge by Arthur into the neck of Nicolas Otamendi. Television replays suggested both were stonewall penalties and Argentina Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia complained that Zambrano “unjustifiably omitted the use of VAR” to review the two incidents.

Argentina went on to finish third, beating Chile 2-1 in a match in which Messi was harshly , while Brazil earned a ninth title with a 3-1 victory over Peru in the final. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner appeared to be the victim of shoving by Chile’s Gary Medel, but the referee sent both players off after 37 minutes with Argentina already two goals to the good.

Copa America 2020 has postponed to 2021 due to corona virus pandemic. Will the champion player win a title for his national side this time? Let’s wait and see.
